In 1983, Dr. Muhammad Azam Bokhari started Dermatology at Punjab
Medical College in a small room as only a limited OPD service.
With his unremitting efforts, continuous hard work, and
limitless assistance of the colleagues/seniors, the Department
is now a well established unit consisting of 30 bedded
in-patients facility at DHQ, Hospital and ever-busy OPDs at DHQ
and Allied Hospitals where more than 200 patients are seen
daily.

Currently, the Department of Dermatology is headed by Prof.
Shahid Javaid Akhtar who has got special interests in Lasers,
Skin Surgery, and contemporary Dermatological teaching/training.
Other staff members include Assistant Prof. Muhammad Arif Maan,
Senior Registrars Muhammad Shahid Sheikh and Aneela Asghar,
Academic Registrar Javed Iqbal, Administrative Registrar Mazhar
Iqbal Raja, Senior Medical Officer Abdul Shakoor, five
Postgraduate Trainee Residents, and three House Officers. The
unit is recognized for postgraduate training in Dermatology by
College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, Postgraduate
Medical Institute, and by the University of Health Sciences.
In addition to the routine consultations, the Department of
Dermatology is providing state-of-the-art services in skin care
such as
electro-surgery, cryotherapy, patch testing, mycology,
dermatohistopathology, phototherapy, and dermatosurgey. Latest
equipment like IPL and RF are also available. The unit is
actively involved in academic and research activities and has
many local/international publications to its credit. It hosted
the two International Conferences of Dermatology and the coming
27th International Conference of Pakistan Association
of Dermatologists is also going to be organized by this
department in 2010.
Department regularly holds workshops/seminars on common
skin disorders, leprosy, and sexually transmitted disease for
doctors of Government dispensaries and rural health centers in
collaboration with District Health Development Center,
Faisalabad and is coordinating with AIDS Control Program to
control AIDS in Pakistan.
Dr. Abdul Shakoor Sajid Ansari of this unit has been
awarded Presidential Seerat Award on his book entitilled KHAIRUL
BASHAR (sallala ho alaih-e- wassalam).
