Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology


The Department of Forensic Medicine was started in Kissan Hall, UAF in 1974. In 1982, it was shifted to the new building of the current campus. The Department is involved in teaching and training of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology to 3rd year MBBS students. It also imparts medicolegal /postmortem training to the CMO’s/WCMO’s of Faisalabad, Sargodha, Toba Tek Singh and Jhang division. The department is also recognized for postgraduate training. Multiple trainees of this department are working at different posts in various institutes of the country.
The department has a purpose built building with lecture theatre, well equipped museum, biological laboratory, toxicological garden and offices for doctors and paramedical staff. Department is equipped with all modern teaching aids like multimedia, computers, overhead and slide projectors Postmortem unit of the department started working in 1996 and uptil now, more than 7000 postmortem examinations have been conducted. Dr. Javed Iqbal is incharge of this unit. It also has a view gallery for medical students and a demonstration room where classes of undergraduates are taken, not only from FMU but also from Madina University, Aziz Fatima Medical College and Independent Medical College.
Storage facility of 10 dead bodies is also present with 4 freezers. It has also undertaken computerization of postmortem reports till date. COD’s of Allied and DHQ hospital were attached with Forensic Medicine Department in 1999. Every year more than 8000 cases of injuries of other assaults are examined in this department. Dr. Zafar Iqbal is incharge of COD’s of DHQ and Dr. Ehsan Ahmad, of Allied hospital.
The department is presently headed by Associate Professor Dr. Khurram Sohail Raja. Other teaching staff includes Assistant Professors Dr. Mobin Inam Pal, Dr. Kishwar Naheed, and Dr. Muhammad Naeem, senior Demonstrators Dr. Javed Iqbal, Dr. Zuneera Misbah, Dr. Muhammad Shafique, Dr. Ehsan Ahmad, Dr. Ijaz Hussain and Dr. Sidra Latif. Department also provides technical assistance to District Standing Medical Board Faisalabad and Provincial Standing Medical Board Punjab as well as expert services to the courts of law. Department also co-ordinates with Medicine Department regarding working of Poison Control Centre.
It is also designing a postgraduate certificate course of CMO’s and WCMO’s for better understanding of basic principles of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
