Introduction

Department of Ophthalmology which is now one of the best departments of FMU was established in 1977 in DHQ Hospital, Faisalabad and then shifted to Allied Hospital, Faisalabad in 1996. It was headed by Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmad Mahju and Prof. Dr. Zia-ud-Din Ahmad, Prof. Dr. Muhammed Sultan and now Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Malik is Head of the Department.
This Department has an honor to produce up till now 30 FCPS / FRCS, 32 DOMS, 25 MCPS and 02 M.S in Ophthalmology. There is a structured training schedule for the undergraduate and Post-graduate students in practice in the Department. The Ophthalmology Department Faisalabad Medical University is the only teaching and tertiary referral center in the region of central Punjab. It provides the Eye care services to the population of 40 million of Faisalabad and Sargodha divisions.
The Department has three units, One in Allied Hospital Faisalabad, One in DHQ Hospital and also a sub-unit in Government General Hospital, Ghulam Muhammad Abad. The indoor Department is 72 bedded with a busy OPD and Operation theatres. A state of the art Diagnostic and Research Center with latest Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Teaching facilities has been established in March 2008.
A large number of the patients from the region are being diagnosed, treated and operated upon by the highly skilled personnel of the Department and it is increasing day by day. It is the only referral centre for Medico-legal cases and for Medical board.
In collaboration with various NGOs the department sent its faculty members abroad for super specialty training in Vitreo-Retina, Glaucoma, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Cornea. These highly skilled and trained specialists after their training now serving in the department. This department is one of the only few departments of the country which are accredited by CPSP for the training in Vitreoretinal and Paediatric Ophthalmology.
Recently the department managed to establish the Eye Bank in collaboration with Lyallpur Eye Trust. Eye donation counselors motivate the families of the deceased patients and take corneal donation which are transplanted to the needy people free of cost.
The facilities available in the Department include Digital Slit-Lamp Microscopy, Auto-Refractometry, Automated Visual Field Perimetry, A-Scan , B-Scan, Keratometery, Corneal topography, Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, Fundus Photography, Yag Laser and Argon Laser, OCT, EOG, ERG, Pattern ERG, multifocal ERG and VEP facility.
Vitreo-retina and Paediatric Ophthalmology Clinics have been established in OPD. It is equipped with video Slit-Lamp Microscope for the live display of the patients on the TV screen for the teaching and training purpose. Similarly the latest surgical techniques of Phaco- Emulsification and Vitreo-Retinal surgery, Glaucoma surgery, orbital and oculoplastic surgical procedures are available in the department. A special Low Vision Aids Clinic has been established to help the patients with irreversible visual loss.
