Introduction

Faisalabad is the 3rd biggest city of Pakistan. Keeping in view the dire need of the specialty in the region, the Department of Urology was established at Punjab Medical College /Allied Hospital. Faisalabad in 1998. Presently this Department comprises of two units. Urology unit at Allied Hospital have 62 beds and other Unit at DHQ Hospital have 36 beds. It is very well equipped with modern instruments and gadgets. A state of the art Urology Library is established in the Department. It contains a number of international and national journals along with latest urology books.
The Urology Department is headed by Prof. Dr Safdar Hassan Sial with a very competent team of consultant urologists. This Department is recognized for FCPS Urology training by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and for MS Urology training by University of Health Sciences Lahore Pakistan.
PATIENT CARE: At the moment, the Department of Urology and Kidney Transplantation consists of 98 beds. It caters for almost all the subspecialties of urology like endo-urology, reconstructive surgery, andrology, female urology, open urological surgery and renal transplantation. Emergency cover is provided round the clock. The average patient load is as under:
1. Out Patient Department at Allied Hospital (OPD Twice/ week. Annual patients turnover is more than 10,000 and DHQ Hospital (OPD Six/week. Annual patients turnover is more than 10,000.
2. Indoor Admissions at Allied Hospital about 2000/year. Surgical Procedure: About 1500/ year. Similarly, at DHQ Hospital about 1200/year and surgical procedure about 900/year.
Stone disease. BPH, stricture urethra and Bladder carcinoma make the biggest chunk of indoor admissions. Paediatric Urology section is fully developed and is managing majority of the urological diseases of the children. The Department has all the necessary back up facilities like Nephrology, Radiology, Pathology, Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

i. Training of undergraduates & postgraduates students: A total of 6 doctors have qualified. There are 18 postgraduate residents undergoing training at the moment, 8 in MS Urology and 10 in FCPS Urology program.
ii. Large number of research projects have been published while some are in the pipeline.
iii. Two international annual meetings of Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons have been hosted by the Department in 2008 and 2015.
iv. Nine Live Operative PCNL and Laparoscopic workshops were organized in the Institution. A number of international workshops organized by various international academic organizations are regularly telecasted online in the conference hall of the Department.
v. This Department is also managing a medical research journal “APMC” as Editor and Chief Editor.
In spite of all limitations, team at Urology Department, Faisalabad Medical University is striving hard for excellence.
